Rose Weekend

America’s oldest public rose garden celebrates its 117th anniversary Saturday, June 19 and Sunday, June 20 with the return of Rose Weekend.

    The event includes a wide range of free educational and family-friendly activities while showcasing Elizabeth Park’s stunning gardens at the peak of their seasonal beauty, featuring thousands of roses in bloom.

    Poetry in the Park Rose Garden Reading — Under the Big Tent  

    Featuring Connecticut Poets: Antoinette Brim-Bell & Sophie Cabot Black

    1 p.m. | Antoinette Brim-Bell Reading author of These Women You Gave MeIcarus in Love, and Psalm of the Sunflower is a Cave Canem Foundation fellow. Her poetry, memoir, and critical work has appeared in various journals and magazines, as well as, in anthologies including Villanelles, Stand Our Ground: Poems for Trayvon Martin and Marissa Alexander, Critical Insights: Alice Walker, 44 on 44: Forty-Four African American Writers on the 44th President of the United States, Not A Muse, Just Like A Girl: A Manifesta, and The Whiskey of Our Discontent: an anthology of essays commemorating Ms. Gwendolyn Brooks, winner of the 2017 Central New York Book Award for nonfiction. Brim-Bell is a Professor of English at Capital Community College.
     
    1:45 p.m. | Sophie Cabot Black ReadingSophie Cabot Black’s first poetry collection, The Misunderstanding of Nature, received the Poetry Society of America’s First Book Award. Her poetry has appeared in numerous magazines, including The Atlantic MonthlyThe New RepublicThe New YorkerThe Paris Review, and PoetryThe Descent, a second collection of poems, received the 2005 Connecticut Book Award, was also nominated for the 2005 Colorado Book Award and was subsequently chosen as a “hot pick” on MSNBC’s program, Topic A With Tina Brown. Her latest collection The Exchange (2013), received critical acclaim including a starred Publisher’s Weekly, and on All Things Considered was reviewed as “the book for you”.

    This open-mic poetry reading will be hosted by Ben Grossberg, West Hartford’s poet laureate. It is being coordinated with the Friends & Enemies of Wallace Stevens (stevenspoetry.org), and the generous assistance of the Elizabeth Park Conservancy.
